Why I Practice Lifestyle Medicine
Thomas Edison once said, “The Doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patient in the care of the human frame, in diet and the cause and prevention of disease.” If this is true, then we are the future, and you, our patients, are at the forefront of the healthcare revolution.
Most of our patients that receive our nutrition are suffering from parasites, dysbiosis, or a yeast infection. To maintain daily health, we emphasize exercise. If you haven’t tried one of our Move Right classes, now is the time.
I find it hard to describe how I practice. The closest I can come is to say it is a new type of speciality that I might call “lifestyle medicine.” Lifestyle medicine is personalized care that addresses primary prevention and the underlying causes (rather than symptoms) of serious organic diseases. It is a science-based field of health care that is enhanced by the examination of the core imbalances that result in disease conditions.
When underlying lifestyle causes are not addressed, people often take medication to treat the symptoms of chronic disease for the rest of their lives. When we turn the spotlight on root causes, most patients are able to reduce or stop taking medications; many make surgery unnecessary.
The toughts we think, the foods we eat, and the way we move have more to do with the quality of how we live than the medications or immunizations we need, but you have to be willing to dig down to the roots.
There is strong evidence that this approach works well and saves money. Unfortunately, insurance companies do not usually cover this type of treatment, nor is it currently taught in most schools, practiced by most physicians, or delivered in most hospitals or health care settings.
Lifestyle treatments are perceived as ineffective because most doctors believe that patients will not listen when you tell them to eat better and exercise properly. There is some truth to that. Part of that is their responsibility, and part is the doctor’s. Unless we can provide the support, education, and resources they need to begin changing their own behavior, they won’t see sustainable, significant changes.
The current structure of the American health care system is not sustainble. It will not reduce the burden of chronic disease and it doesn’t place nearly enough emphasis on prevention. We need to implement a new way of living. It starts here.
At Fundamental Health Solutions, our mission is to change the way our patients view their health and to manage their epectiations of their health care providers. To those of you who are activeley participating in your own health and taking personal responsibility, I commend you. If you are involved in our Blue Zones program, learning to Eat Right, or taking part in our Move Right Exercise program, you are the front lines of the health care revolution with us. Our mission is to improve the health of our Naples community – one family, one patient, and one day at a time.
